Using Ceiling Fans to Improve the Comfort of Your Room
Heat naturally rises. In the summer months, ceiling fans pull warm air up; in the winter, they push the warm air down. Ceiling fans can cool a room by creating a wind chill effect; it does not actually lower the room temperature, it makes the air FEEL cooler by increasing the evaporation of moisture on your skin. Running a ceiling fan in a room where the temperature is 80 degrees can make you feel as though the temperature is 72 degrees. Ceiling fans can also help heat a room by pushing warm air that is trapped near the ceiling back down into the room, thus warm air is circulating where it is needed, reducing the need for your heater to work.

Your ceiling fan should be set to move in a counter clockwise direction during the summer months, and clockwise direction during the winter month.

When used correctly and in conjunction with your HVAC system, ceiling fans can noticeably lower your energy costs. Effective circulation can make a room feel cooler, thereby lowering air conditioning bills due to reduced demand on the cooling system.
What to Consider When Choosing a Ceiling Fan
Choosing and installing a ceiling fan is a little more complicated than the do-
- Is the ceiling fan going to replace an old light fixture?
- Do the existing circuits have the correct wiring?
- Will I need to have new electrical wiring installed or can I use the existing electrical circuit?
- Do I want to operate the fan by a light switch or use a remote control?
- Does the fan include a light kit? If so, will I need to install new wall switch controls, dimmer switch or separate on/off switches?
- Is the fan going to be installed on a low ceiling or a high ceiling?
- Is the best location for the fan based on the location of the strongest ceiling joists? On the other hand, if the joist is not centered in the room, what should I do?
- Is the correct UL-
rated electrical box for my ceiling fan available? - Did the original electrical contractor install a mounting bracket between the joists?
- When finished, will the fan be properly balanced and leveled to prevent wobbling?
Types of Ceiling Fans
Ceiling fans are available in a variety of designs ranging from simple to confusing. Choosing the right ceiling fan for your room is more complex than picking one that looks nice. Aside from the range of typical features that a ceiling fan might have, you must also consider the size of the room as well as the height of the ceiling.
Choosing the Right Type Ceiling Fan

If your ceiling is angled more than 30", you will also need a sloped ceiling adapter or vaulted ceiling adapter which can be purchased separately.
Choosing the Right Size Ceiling Fan
The size of a ceiling fan's blade span is the most important factor in choosing the right size ceiling fan. A fan that is too small or too big for your room may look out of place. Also, a fan that is too small will probably not move enough air and a fan that is too big might overpower the room. Manufacturers recommend the following guidelines:
- Large rooms up to 225 square feet (15' x 15') and larger, use a fan with a blade span of 50", 52", 54" or 56".
- Medium rooms up to 144 square feet (12' x 12'), use a fan with a blade span of 42" or 44".
- Small rooms up to 64 square feet (8' x 8'), use a fan with a 32" blade span.
