When Child Safety Outlets Are Required

Regardless of whether or not you own or rent your residence or have children, tamper resistant receptacles are required. Even if you don’t have children living with you, children of friends and relatives require protection when visiting. Also, electrical shock and burn accidents related to contact with an electrical outlet are not limited to children.

National Electrical Code (NEC)

The National Electrical Code (NEC) is the standard for the safe installation of electrical wiring and equipment in the United States. The NEC, while having no legally binding regulation as written, is generally adopted by states and municipalities as the standards by which they enforce safe electrical practices within their jurisdiction. Considered the benchmark for safe electrical installations, the NEC is published by The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) every three years.

Install Child Safety Outlet | Nisat Electric | Allen, TX

Receptacle Caps vs.

Child Safety Outlets

Simply covering an unused outlet with a receptacle cap or outlet cover is not sufficient protection for children. These products are easily removed and once removed the outlet is no longer protected. Furthermore, the receptacle cap or outlet cover can be a choking hazard.

In 2006, about 1,800 children under the age of 14 received treatment at a hospital emergency room due to electrical shock or burns caused by improper contact with an electrical outlet.

Child Safety Outlets

A child safety outlet looks and functions like a regular outlet with an added safety feature that helps protect small children from electrical shocks and burns. These receptacles have spring-loaded shutters that close off the contact openings of the outlet; because both springs must be compressed at the same time, the shutters will not open if a child attempts to insert a foreign object into one opening.
